Individual therapy is a method of mental health treatment that occurs between a client and a licensed therapist. Therapy sessions are typically held weekly for 60 minutes. We will use that time to evaluate your needs and your goals, explore your interpersonal and family dynamics, identify your negative core beliefs and start building your resource toolbox. Depending on your participation and consistency in therapy, you may start feeling better after about 4-6 weeks. If you're not, it's important to talk to your therapist so that you can evaluate what's working and what isn't.
Absolutely. Your identifying information and protected health information (PHI) is preserved in an electronic health record that complies with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards. Additionally, all correspondence via email or text is secured through a HIPAA-compliant Google platform. You can request to share your protected health information with another party by signing a release of information (ROI).
Upon establishing a therapist-client relationship, you will be asked to complete intake paperwork that includes a Notice of Privacy Practices and Informed Consent. These documents ensure that you understand the benefits and risks of the therapeutic process.
Yes, and you are welcome and encouraged to discuss this with your therapist. Your diagnosis is primarily used to bill insurance for reimbursement for services. These diagnoses are drawn from criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, now in its fifth edition. The function and utility of the DSM-V has been informed by medical, cultural and sociopolitical contexts. While initially written to categorize mental illness, when used uncritically, the text has pathologized and harmed marginalized populations. You can read more about the history, editions, and problematic aspects of the DSM here and here.
